Steve played his first gig when he was 12 years old. That makes 42 years of playing professionally! His first instrument was the saxophone and he played in the marching band, with the jazz band and even played bassoon during symphony season. But since he had started playing around the time the Beatles came to America, he quickly picked up guitar so he could play in some of the many garage bands that started popping up everywhere. Since no one else wanted to play bass back then, it wasn’t long before his main axe was the bass with a little sax on the side. From the beginning Steve played almost every weekend and when he graduated in ’69, he started playing 5 and 6 nights a week while going to school at LSU. Initially taking engineering, he switched to music with a major in composition and sax as his major instrument. Still mostly on bass in the bands but about the time he got out of LSU, a guy named Barry Edgar saw playing guitar and hired him to go on the road with him. That was the start of many years on the road …. Playing a week in Chattanooga and then three weeks in Brownsville, TX and then a month in Peoria. And it was during that period when he first came to Daytona Beach …… he never forgot it.
Even after quitting the traveling, Steve continues to play full time ….. Sometimes on bass …. Sometimes guitar and vocals ….. and always on sax.
And now after so many years of playing he finds himself back where it all really began for him ….. Daytona.
